Expotel goes CarbonNeutral©

29th October 2007

Expotel, one of the UK's largest independent hotel reservations, business travel and conference and event management companies, today announced it has achieved the CarbonNeutral© brand mark.

Expotel is working in partnership with market leader, The CarbonNeutral Company. The CarbonNeutral brand mark is backed by an independently managed and audited standard for carbon management which covers assessment, reduction, offsetting and communication of carbon emissions.

"The three key stages of assessment for Expotel were carried out by the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management Limited for The CarbonNeutral Company," explains Ian Burnley, Expotel's CEO. "A full emissions assessment was conducted in order to deliver an accurate carbon footprint relating to all our operations." The assessment covered greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the operational activities of Expotel for the 12 month period of December 2005 to November 2006.

Three projects were chosen in England, Scotland and Wales to offset the emissions which are: the Nairnside Wood, Inverness-shire. Nairnside is a new native woodland which will help restore the Caledonian Pinewood and provide a valuable habitat for many rare species including Scottish Crossbills. This site will be planted with Rowan, Willow, Alder, Juniper, Scots Pine and Silver Birch.

The second project is Myndd-Y-Garnedd right in the heart of Snowdonia which will link two existing National Nature Reserves through a ‘new native woodland'. It has been designed to grow from a combination of natural regeneration and new planting. The main species which will be planted are Birch, Sessile Oak, Rowan, Willow, Hazel and Hawthorn.

The third and final project is Greenland Wood is located near the small town of Overseal in Derbyshire, close to Burton-on-Trent. The site will be planted with a mixture of Ash, Oak, Birch and other mixed broadleaves. The planting will promote the conservation of key habitats for indigenous birds and insects, and allow the spread of valuable and rare wildflowers.

Expotel is also offering carbon neutrality to its customers. Expotel will calculate clients' carbon footprint based on its hotel and conference consumption either for them to offset through Expotel or through projects of their choice.

Internal measures to decrease emissions have been implemented such as recycling, the installation of energy efficient hot water heaters (instead of kettles) and lights that automatically shut off when no motion is detected.
